Mary Barra holds the positions of Chair and Chief Executive Officer at General Motors. On January 4, 2016, she was elected Chair of the GM Board of Directors, and she has been in the role of GM’s CEO since January 15, 2014.

Under Barra’s guidance, General Motors envisions a future characterized by zero crashes, aiming to save lives; zero emissions, to ensure a healthier planet for future generations; and zero congestion, giving customers back the valuable commodity of time.

Her primary focus revolves around enhancing the customer experience, strengthening GM’s core vehicle and services business. Concurrently, she is at the forefront of leading the transformation of personal mobility by leveraging advanced technologies such as connectivity, electrification, and autonomous driving.

Before taking on the role of CEO, Mary Barra served as GM’s Executive Vice President of Global Product Development, Purchasing, and Supply Chain from August 2013, and previously as Senior Vice President of Global Product Development since February 2011. In these capacities, Barra and her teams were responsible for overseeing the design, engineering, and quality of GM vehicle launches on a global scale.

Her journey within GM started in 1980 as a co-op student at the Pontiac Motor Division while studying at the General Motors Institute (now Kettering University). She completed her studies with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering in 1985, followed by a Master of Business Administration from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1990.

In her capacity as Chair of the Business Roundtable, an association of CEOs from top American companies, Barra holds a significant leadership position. She also serves on the Board of Directors for the Walt Disney Company and the Duke University Board of Trustees, in addition to her involvement with the Detroit Economic Club. Furthermore, she holds the role of Chair and founding member of GM’s Inclusion Advisory Board.
